Project One - Dad

“I didn’t know where my body was when I was walking through a space”. These are the words my dad used to describe his Multiple Sclerosis - a neurological condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. In MS, messages that are sent out by the brain are interrupted as the immune system mistakes the myelin for an invader. Over time the myelin becomes damaged, which affects the nerves ability to send messages efficiently and quickly, this is what leads to symptoms.

With my dads condition being something Iv’e grown up around, I chose for him to be the subject of my personal investigation in photography. My intent throughout the project was to document the physical and emotional elements of his condition and how it affects him using both visuals and text. For the text aspect, I gave my dad a journal to document his everyday life/ passage through the illness which was then incorporated into my visuals throughout.

Reconstructed Portraits Of My Dad:

Below are some later experimentation’s in the project. The misalignment seen links to how my dad is unable to remain still for short periods of time plus his coordination issues he experiences as a result of his condition. (Inspired by the works of Andy Denzler & David Hockney.)
